We again celebrated the pre-Lent Karneval on Rosenmontag, Monday February 16th, at the Bavarian Beerhouse, just off Queen Square in Bristol. We were honoured by the presence of the Lord Mayor, Councillor Alastair Watson and his wife Sarah, the Lady Mayoress. This year we were also delighted to welcome 16 business studies students and two staff from the Hannah-Arendt-Schule in Hannover, who had come to spend a week with their partner college, the South Gloucestershire and Stroud College (SGS), Filton. They had only arrived into Birmingham that day and had a fairly bad journey by coach on the M5 to Bristol...
The artist who created the PENvolution installation, Kerstin Schulz, compiled a comprehensive and beautiful catalogue of all the installations to date as well as those still being planned in Hannover’s partner cities: Poznan, Bristol, Rouen, Hiroshima, Blantyre (Malawi) and Hannover. On her return to Bristol, Lynne Evans was able to present a copy of the catalogue to Mayor George Ferguson, who had been involved in early discussions on bringing the installation to Bristol when he visited Hannover in April 2014.
Jana Kreimeier, student of English and Philosophy at Münster University, spent a term at Cotham School here in Bristol, from September to December 2014. She says the following of her stay:
I spent nearly four months in Bristol where I served an internship as a foreign language assistant for German at Cotham School. My grandpa Wilhelm Knicker, member of the Hannover-Bristol-Gesellschaft, arranged for a contact with Ann Kennard, chair of Bristol Hannover Council, who supported me so kindly with the organisation of my stay.
I enjoyed my time in Bristol a lot and am so thankful that it has been...
From Frank Titmarsh, Bristol-Hannover Council Committee
Following its 6 week stay at The Central Library in Bristol, the Pencil Mobile Room was opened to the public on Thursday 22nd January in the Städtische Galerie Kubus in Hannover, along with other ‘Analogue to Digital’ installations, from Hannover’s twin cities around the world. Lynne Evans and I went to Hannover to represent the committee at this unique event.
The first event of the week was the press conference at Galerie Kubus where local press, magazines and local radio were invited to see the exhibition and introduced to the artists...
Bristol Hannover Council has recently become aware of an exchange between South Gloucestershire and Stroud College and the Hannah Arendt Schule, Hannover.

They will join Bristol Hannover Council for the Rosenmontag party on the 16th, will have a reception with the Lord Mayor at the Mansion House on the 19th, and will be visiting schools and businesses in Bristol and seeing the sights.
The report below is of South Gloucestershire and Stroud College’s visit to Hannover in October 2014.

On Sunday December 7th, more than twenty members and friends of Bristol-Hannover Council enjoyed Wurst and Bratkartoffeln, washed down by a couple of mugs of Glühwein, at the Weihnachtsmarkt at the Podium in Broadmead, Bristol. The Weihnachtsmarkt, which is brought to us from Osnabrück (not far from Hannover), has gone from strength to strength in the few years it has been with us. After a difficult start several years ago on Castle Green, later in the City Centre, managers Harry and Tina have worked hard with the City Council so that it has become a popular place during the Christmas period...
On Sunday November 16th, members of BHC visited Bath in order to celebrate two links with Hannover: firstly the exhibition being shown at the Fashion museum, entitled Georgians: Dress for Polite Society. This was a delightful display of court and other dress through the 18th and 19th centuries, when the Georges I-IV were on the throne. There was an interesting addendum also, of clothes from our modern age, such as a dress by Vivienne Westwood, which owe their style to the Georgian period. The group then moved to the exquisite Herschel Museum of Astronomy at 19 New King Street, where one can learn...
A Medal of Honour has been presented to Bristol-Hannover Council by the British-German Association. It was accepted by the Chair, Ann Kennard, on behalf of BHC. The ceremony took place on 7th November at the Bristol-Anglo German Society dinner, celebrating 25 years since the fall of the Berlin Wall. The medal was presented by Stephen Watson, Chair of the British-German Association. Mr Watson spoke very warmly of the contribution to British-German relations made by BHC in the 67 years since its inception in 1947. He explained the history and significance of the medal: The British-German Association's...
The Lord Mayor, Alastair Watson, opened this year’s Christmas Market on Friday November 7th and members of BHC committee visited the stalls with him. The Market is bigger than ever and it is evident that it is becoming an essential and fun feature amongst the Bristol shoppers in the run-up to Christmas. The central installation is the so-called ‘Pyramide’ – all Christmas markets in Germany have them – it is a kind of windmill, with moving figures, depicting the Nativity scene. Around it is a series of pretty bars and tables, selling Wurst, Kartoffelsalat, Pretzels and, of course, Glühwein!...
The PENvolution art installation, created by Kerstin Schulz, a Hannoverian artist, was opened by the Lord Mayor, Alastair Watson, on November 3rd in the Central Library, Bristol, with a reception organised by the hosts, Bristol-Hannover Council. It has already been greeted with great enthusiasm by the public and commented on in the local media. The aim of the installation is to show the development of communications over the years, from the pencil to the computer. The PencilMobileRoom, as it is called (see photo attached), contains a desk, chair, sculpture, telephone and lamp inside, all made of over...
