** Our season of German films comes to an end with Gundermann (2018) This film, directed by Andreas Dresen, is a German biopic about singer-songwriter Gerhard Gundermann, who worked as an excavator operator in an East German lignite mine while also being a popular musician. The film moves between two timelines — his life before and after German reunification — and gradually reveals that his involvement with the Stasi, a fact he struggled to reconcile with his own idealism. Its central themes are the tension between personal conviction and complicity under an authoritarian system, the search for identity and forgiveness after the fall of the GDR, and the pull between ordinary working life and artistic expression. German with English subtitles.
