** To the Watershed on October 15 for the BFI preview of Fatherland, a film by the Polish director Pawel Pawlikowski about the return of Thomas Mann and his daughter Erika to a divided Germany in 1949.
The film interweaves themes about the future of Germany and the responsibility for the past with the troubled private life of the Manns, including the death through suicide of his son Klaus.
Beautifully photographed in black and white, the film successfully evokes the tensions between Mann and his children as well as this momentous period in German history.
Good to see BHC members as well as friends from Clevedon Twinning Association out in force.
