** The German Embassy in London holds an annual Sommerfest in order to honour people who have been instrumental in promoting the German language, by their enthusiasm in teaching, at their workplace or in their region.

A previous Sommerfest celebrated the launch of Axel Scheffler’s new book for primary school children “Wuschel auf der Erde”, a story about an alien who landed on earth, and did not know the (German) language, which the book introduced children to. Ann Kennard has attended a number of these events and this year was the turn of a former England footballer, Tony Woodcock, who told us about his footballing career, which included playing for FC Köln (Cologne) and living in Germany for long periods of time.

He then presented awards to this year’s German language champions, one of whom had encouraged German language learning in the civil service. It was, as ever, a well-attended event, which the Susanne Baumann, the new Ambassador, will have been pleased to note.
