** Margit Spitta, who died recently, was a long-time and very active member of the committee of our partner organisation, the Hannover-Bristol Gesellschaft. Margit was a very lively and imaginative person, who spoke excellent English. She ran the Gesellschaft’s conversation classes “Speaking English is Fun” for many years.
She and Ann Kennard discovered that they had both attended the Interpreting Institute at Heidelberg University, possibly at the same time. Ann and Tony stayed several times in their house with its welcoming balcony, where we enjoyed many a glass of wine, and Margit’s beautiful garden. We were happy to host them in Bristol, though they insisted on sleeping in their motorhome on the drive.
Margit had become very depressed when her sister went into a nursing home and she had several falls, which further affected her well-being and ultimately turned into dementia. Her last year was spent in a care home, where Gerd visited her every day until her death. Ann and Tony visited her with Gerd during the official visit in September 2024, but she was a shadow of her former self, and her death was in the end a happy release.
Ann was able to attend her funeral with members of the Gesellschaft. We will remember her lively and happy self of former years.
