Twinnings signpost inaugurated on College Green

** The beautiful new twinning signpost has been inaugurated in front of City Hall, in the presence of the Lord Mayor Cllr Paul Goggin, Mayor Rees and Donna Speed, the leader of the Guild of Guardians, who funded the creation of the signpost.

Speeches by the Lord Mayor, Donna Speed and Ann Kennard (BHC chair also representing BITA) emphasised the importance of Bristol’s twinnings to the international profile of the city.

About 70 representatives of the seven twinnings were present, along with the artist, Steve Joyce, the prime mover of the initiative and former twinnings officer, Alix Hughes, and Caroline Twigg of the Council’s International Office, who saw the project over the line after a long eight-year gestation!

The individual street signs of each twin city are facsimiles of signs in the relevant city, and all represent someone of note in that city. Thus Hannah Arendt Platz was chosen for the Hannover sign, because the famous writer and philosopher was born in Hannover.
