Dear friends in Bristol,
Now it`s springtime in Hannover and our fountain season is opened. On our fourth and last part of our walk to Hannover’s fountains I will show you four very different objects of them.
Let´s start in the very popular shopping mall “Lister Meile”, beginning at the northern exit of the railway station. In the middle of the mall, crossing the Körting Street, we find the “Körting-Brunnen”. Körting was the name of a pump factory in Hannover, so we have a wonderful combination of pump and fountain. The figures are water spouting cocks. Especially children love it to use the water as a shower in the summertime.
The most animalic fountain in Hannover is the “Gezänk am Brunnen – nagging at the fountain”. He is situated at the remote street “Pinkenburger Gang” (Hannover-Buchholz) near the place where the British Military Hospital was located. Four animals want to drink the water, a cat at the top of the 3 m high stone column, a duck sitting on the water pipe, a goat near the bucket and a sow with her piglets. To start the running of the water it is necessary to press a button at the side of the column.
Now we are in Hannover South West – Oberricklingen – where Margit Spitta is living. At first we say “hello” to the “Ricklinger Butjer – a little bad boy (not criminal)”. But it seems that he had caught a fish in the Ricklinger Beeke (= stream) without a licence for fishing there. He is standing on a pedestal, below this a little waterfall is running.
The last fountain that I will show you is my favorite one because of the very aesthetical sculpture of a beautiful girl in good company with fishes. We will find her on the Friedrich-Ebert-Place (= german president 1919-1925). She is sitting on two fishes , two water spouting fishes on her arms. This sculpture was designed by Ludwig Vierthaler, who also created the “Jumping salmons” (Part 2).
Epilog. Writing the articles of the fountains I could practise my small English knowledges, of course with the help of my English dictionary. It was a great pleasure for me to introduce you some of the most pretty fountains of Hannover.
But I am not sure that anyone was interested in these articles, because I didn`t get any response – praise or criticism. That makes me a little bit sad.
With best wishes from Hannover,
Hans
