Online talk: City of Women – Female Artists in Vienna 1900-1938
June 10 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm
Do join us for another talk with member Colin Evans, this time on Austrian art. Colin says:
“Vienna was once known as the City of Music because of the number of famous musicians who lived and worked there. But less is known about the City also being host to an extraordinarily talented group of women artists who, against all the discriminatory odds typical of the first half of the 20th Century, produced a body of work of exceptional quality that embraced the dramatic changes taking place in art as it changed from realism to modernism. Alas politics intervened to bring all this to a close, but diligent researchers have unearthed what can only be described as a genuine treasure trove of art not seen in public for over 80 years. I am sure you will enjoy looking at my selection from this collection but also to join in the debate that was relevant at the time, now that the discovery has reignited – is there such a thing as female art? Can you tell by looking at a painting that it was created by a woman? We have already had some wonderful post-talk dialogues to keep our grey matter working during lockdown so hope the same will happen this time.”
